I'm Gonna Miss you - uHall LKC Wing #06-01

What weird year 2020 has been.

Some reasons why:
- The Johor- Singapore border closed for the first time in history
- It's weirder to walk around without a mask than it is to be wearing one
- I haven't seen my annoying colleague that I'm not very fond of in person since February

That last point delights me the most as it is in line with my goal to stay away as much as possible from people who give off negative vibes. The reason that I have not seen her much this year is because we have been on alternate teams since February (for the record, I am on blue Team A while she is on orange Team B). Then there was this thing called the 'Circuit Breaker' (I seriously can't being myself to call it CB like some other people do) which spanned from April to June, when the entire office was closed as a measure to curb the spread of COVID-19. We are now back to alternate weeks, which suits me perfectly.

The first day I went back to office after about 4 months was 31 August 2020. First, let me wax lyrical about my office for a bit. When I first saw my new desk when I started working here in October 2018, I couldn't help but think that it exceeded my expectations.

It is spacious and has a nice view of the garden on the 6th floor of one of the wings in University Hall. Due to the fact that there is glass all around, I can actually see people before they reach my space but they are not able to see me clearly as my door is frosted, how perfect is that?! In fact, it is so nice that management has decided to evict me to convert the room into a dining space for visitors. Boohooo.... I think I should be moving soon, to #06-03, and since I haven't seen the new place yet, I don't know what kind of environment it would be. I know though that I won't be able to see whether it is raining or not for sure. =(

After months of working with a laptop screen, I came to work on 31 August and got a shock at how pampered I had been previously, with this nice, huge screen. I swear it was like looking at words through a magnifying glass and it took me a bit of time to get used to the huge font at first, hahahaha.

I think I took this ugly, dark photo not long after I first joined, hence the very bare space. I have not managed to fill up the shelves but there is definitely more items on the desk compared to when I first started.

View of the rooftop garden on a sunny day. I like it that I can look outside when my eyes get tired and there are sometimes birds around to keep me entertained as well. Actually, it also gets quite hot sometimes so moving to a new office might result in fewer sun spots for me, to think on the bright side @@

View on a rainy day

One of the not so nice points of working on alternate weeks is that I for the most part have to eat lunch alone. Apart from about 3 or 4 days since 31 August up till now, I have been having relaxing, contemplative lunches on my own XD

For memories sake (so that I can remember some of the stuff I had while working here 50 years from now), here's a record of what I had for lunch for the first 2 weeks I was back in office:

(31 August 2020 to 4 September 2020)

On day 1, I had yong taufu at the Science Canteen, with laksa soup instead of my usual clear soup. It is a frequent lunch option as it is tasty, healthy, filling and cheap at S$2.80 for minimum 6 items + noodles (did I mention cheap? ;)

On Tuesday, I had lunch with a friend from another zone (the campus has been segregated into 3 zones and since we couldn't meet any where within campus, we had to go to a neutral place) at Kopitiam at Kent Ridge. This is tomato ban mian with extra vege~

On Wednesday, it was back to the Science Canteen, the side with air-conditioning this time, for Ayam Penyet + curry vege. This is one of the nicer penyet around, the chicken is always fresh and crispy as business is so good.

Thursday was go crazy day, where I ordered McDelivery. May I add that this was one of the very rare times that I ordered in as I abhor expensive delivery fees! This was a Big Mac set with regular fries, drink changed to hot Milo (as it was cold that day) and the highlight of the meal, a Yuzu Pie (which was limited edition for September 2020 only). The Yuzu Pie must make a comeback in future! It was so so good, I ended up having it again the next day, hahahahha.

On Friday, I went for lunch with Aunty Minah, who cleans our office. She's super sweet and is the only one around our floor who seriously compliments me on how I look on a regular basis =) She bought me lunch before when it was her birthday so it was my turn to reciprocate. This was nasi goreng kampung at Al Amaan Restaurant on Clementi Road.

(14 September 2020 to 18 September 2020)

On Monday, I brought some leftover Kimchi Stew that I made over the weekend (yes, I made that). It is one of the fail-proof dishes that I discovered during the Circuit Breaker period, and henceforth I shall never order this dish at overpriced prices in Korean restaurants ever again as it is so simple to make!

On Tuesday, I tried out the new Thai stall at the Science Canteen. The pork knuckle rice definitely exceeded my expectations, whether in terms of taste or presentation. The second time I ordered this, I had to go for reduced rice and still couldn't finish. I think I need to go with reduced, reduced rice next time. Haha.

Given the success of the pork knuckle rice, I decided to try another dish from the same stall on Wednesday, this time it was fried fish. Although it was not bad, it did not wow me the same way as the pork knuckle did, so it will probably be awhile till my next time ordering this. Downed lunch with sugarless Teh C from the canteen drinks stall. This tea is amazing, it is the only place so far where I drink milk tea with no sugar as the milk tea already tastes smooth and fragrant enough on its own.

On Thursday, I visited Kopitiam @ Kent Ridge again. Unfortunately, the chicken rice I had been craving for had closed down, which kind of threw me off balance as I then had no idea what to eat @@. Ended up trying the fried prawn noodles, which was not bad but required a long wait =( The prawns were not very nice too, sad..

Friday was Grab Food day as it was raining heavily and I ended up feeling lazy to leave the office. I was also thinking about chicken chop, so this is one from Collin's Grill which cost me S$14.85 after including delivery charges of S$4. Luckily the mushroom soup was awesome and I fixed my craving, so it kind of offset the inflated price.

Whew, finally done. Can't believe it can take me an afternoon to record 2 weeks worth of lunches XD The photos below are kind of random, but they are from a brand called H&N naturally sweet strawberries from Australia. I was shocked when I opened the box to find strawberries as big as my palm and same size as my mouse! Repurchased once then stopped as I am kind of paranoid that they have mutated genes. XD

Update: Officially moving to my new office space on 17 November 2020. Since I will be working from home on that day, I cleared my desk on 13 November 2020 and the space now looks empty and sad T___T

Cheapskate got free membership for a year! =)

29 August 2020

In conjunction with Singapore National Day, the National Gallery was giving out free memberships to citizens and permanent residents up to the end of August 2020. (Update: The promotion has been extended to 31 October 2020). Being a super cheapskate, I just couldn't give up the opportunity even though I might not be have the best understanding of South East Asian art or even call myself an art enthusiast in general XD.

The day started with lunch at Funan just a couple of streets away. A little place called Fireless Kitchen specialising in sous vide cooking.

The 12-Hours Sous Vide BBQ pork belly was really good but I was slightly disappointed with the sweet potato mash, which was purple instead of the orange that I was expecting. The texture was also baby-food mushy instead of mashed potato mushy - totally not what I was expecting. T___T

Bought my after lunch dessert from Yanmie which was conveniently located next door - Mango Yoghurt. The shop's decor just makes you feel all cheery. I tried the recommended purple rice yoghurt the last time and this was just as good. Too bad that I couldn't take my time with it since I was feeling self conscious walking around without a mask while sipping on my drink.

Finally, my first time to the National Gallery~

It was quite crowded so either people here are big on culture or there's really not many places you can go to in Singapore. Apparently a lot of people go to there just to check-in and take profile shots (while also giving people the impression that they are very artsy and cultured?)

After redeeming our free memberships, we being non-conformists, went in the opposite direction to the Supreme Court Wing first, with the intention to circle over to the City Hall Wing later. We also didn't bother to join the winding queues for some of the exhibitions.

The foundation stone of the building was laid in 1937

A plaque to show that the Supreme Court was declared open in 1939

It is well worth a visit to the building just to admire the lovely architecture and feel the grandness of the space.

Wandering through the exhibits and saw this artistic depiction to remind me of Negaraku.. Scary yet attention grabbing. Some parts of the Supreme Court Wing had that eerie feeling you sometimes get in old buildings, but still nowhere close to the holding cells at St George's Hall in Liverpool or the Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh (oh, I have not put that on record have I? One day, I shall catch up recording my memories #crossfingers).

the Proclamation of the Republic of Singapore is on display

So is the Proclamation of Malaysia
(bila boleh balik kampung?????)

Also saw a handwritten letter from Tunku Abdul Rahman

Too bad the Rotunda Library was cordoned off to the public due to limited space for social distancing (stupid COVID-19), I was told it is quite beautiful inside.

I honestly found the Supreme Court Wing to be much much more interesting compared to the City Hall Wing, but it was more crowded at the latter due to more open and bright spaces for people to take their glamour shots. There was a lady there who spent more than half an hour at the same location on the steps posing for photos. How do I know? She was there when we entered the place and still there when we left after going through several exhibitions!

You can get a nice view of Esplanade, Singapore Flyer and MBS from the City Hall Wing

After a whole afternoon of walking, we wanted to go somewhere for a tea break and faced the same issue that I had during National Day weekend - every single place was full, even the atas places like P.S. Cafe -____-

Ended up at Godiva with a tasty but not very thirst-quenching - Oolong Tea Dark Chocolixir - kind of regret going with no whipped cream since it would have added to the aesthetic value. oh well...

Put this here to remind myself of my one-year National Gallery membership lest I forget and totally fail to use it at least once within the next year (which is quite likely unless they suddenly have some super interesting exhibition that would pique my interest - they once had Monet and Renoir on display, no idea why I missed that!).

Craving Not Satisfied

 23 August 2020

(Wowowow time really flies, can't believe it's already one month since my last post, where did all my days go?!)

It has been 6 months since I've been stuck in tiny Singapore. There are numerous others in the same situation and like dutiful Malaysians, we all crave the Malaysian taste. Although the names of certain dishes are the same in Malaysia and Singapore, they look and taste totally DIFFERENT!!!!

Case in point:

Example 1: Bak Kut Teh 肉骨茶

(pics from Sethlui-Sg one on the left and RavingPanda-Msian one on the right)

The Malaysian version looks much tastier to my Malaysian tastebuds XD

Example 2: Char Koay Teow 炒粿条

(pics from Bearnakedfood-Sg one on the left and Friedchillies-Msian one on the right)

Tell me why fried koay teow must have noodles mixed in?? why?? I personally don't really like yellow noodles but the stall owner told me he couldn't not put noodles in (true story of my first and last time ordering char koay teow in Singapore -____-)

Anyways, to search for that authentic Malaysian taste, I took a one hour+ bus ride all the way to Kallang to meet my friends for some Ipoh chee cheong fun, asam laksa and hor fun. 2 hours+ of travelling just to eat lunch @@ Plus it was raining heavily as well so you know how desperate we are.

Anyways the main point of my story is that the meal wasn't really satisfying. We all agreed that somehow, the taste seems to have been tweaked to match local requirements so although it tasted alright, it just wasn't the same as what we were expecting. I wonder if someone could explain to me why?

What we had between the 3 of us. Clockwise from top - dry hor fun, asam laksa, fried fu chok and turnip, curry chee cheong fun and hakka yong taufu

Since I have the authentic one in penang on an annual basis, this was frankly so-so to me. D'Laksa has a better soup I think

This was satisfying due to the weather but my usual chee cheong fun go to place - G Cheong Fun Restaurant in Tun Aminah, JB wins hands down. That restaurant is a chee cheong fun lover's dream come true as it serves various kinds of chee cheong fun and has the most amazing curried cockles and pork skin!

This was the best in terms of authenticity, but this is kind of fail proof anyway =S

Ok, we had high hopes for this (maybe too high cos we were expecting Ipoh Tuck Kee standards) and oh well... When it was served, we were like "why so dry wan huh?", "why is there mock char siew?", "eh, egg yolk broken edy!". Seriously, when you have seen and tasted the Tuck Kee one... haih....

Lesson learned, do not have too high expectations when dining in Singapore...

The funniest part of the day was that we just went straight home after lunch, so all that butt-numbing bus rides for nothing much  T___T
