Pan's Labyrinth ^^V

Had a lazy week.. Somehow, the exam mood hasnt really sunk in yet...
Was going through all the rubbish stored in my hard disk and i realised that i still have quite a few old movies that i havent had the time to watch yet... Before this i'd already watched Bee movie and American Pie.. So i decided to watch Pan's Labyrinth.. I have wanted to watch this since so long ago when i saw its clip during the oscars...

Wat really intrigued me was this:
Cute or disgusting you decide but i find it kind of cute... :)
Anyway after watching it, i realised that i have found my favourite movie of the year!!
2006 that is, since this was released 2 yrs ago... omg, i'm so outdated...

Pls believe me when i say this is a MUST WATCH movie, if you somehow do not believe what i say then pls go to rotten tomatoes to have a look :)

Directed by Guillermo Del Toro who also did hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth is in Spanish but the subtitles are awesome as the way it is told makes the story even more beautiful... Its essentially about the cruelty of life and how ppl must hold on to any ray of hope that is available..

The movie starts with the ending, an eerie song being hummed by a woman (we later know that its actually a lullaby) and a little girl with a bloody hand, bleeding from the nostrils.. The blood slowly seeps back into her and the story starts:

Ofelia is sent to the Spanish countryside with her mother as her stepfather is a captain of the ruling regime and he wants his wife to give birth to his son there.. BTW, the captain character is the most MCP man you will ever see! On the way, she chances upon some stick-like creature that she assumes is a fairy.. Over time, her mother, Carmen is bedridden as her difficult pregnancy progresses, but Ofelia is very preoccupied as the fairy appears in her room one night and leads her to the labyrinth near the mill where no one dares to go...

There, she meets a very scary/ugly looking faun who tells her that she is in fact a princess from the underground world.. To prove her status in order to be able to return, she has to complete three tasks: getting a golden key from a giant toad's belly, staling a dagger from a man-eating creature's home and the last one is a test on her character.. The pic above is actually of the man-eating creature who has its eyes on its hands, really disgusting.. During the second task, Ofelia was warned time and again not to eat or drink anything from the creature's table, but she was tempted resulting in the death of 2 of the fairies which were the faun's pets...

I wont be able to type out every detail otherwise this will be a super long post.. But anyway, on the other hand, rebels in the mountains break into the general's storehouse where he has collected and stored the whole village's food rations.. He then suspects there is a spy amongst him.. This turns out to be his housekeeper and the family doctor.. Around the same time, Carmen dies during childbirth after bringing into the worls a baby boy, the MCP captain is damn happy of course.. The faun though is very angry about his pets and tells Ofelia that she will never become a princess...

This movie isn't only fantasy.. It's gore, adventure, drama, fantasy, etc all rolled into one..

Imagine someone killed by being hit repeatedly in the face with a bottle.. Or a rebel who stutters being tortured with a hammer so that he will tell who his informants are.. There's also one scene where the captain gets his mouth sliced Ala 'The Joker' style... eew... As a short ending, i can only tell you that good prevailed over evil.. Even though Ofelia and her mother both died, their spirits went back to the underground world where they lived happily ever after and the rebels were able to overthrow the evil ruling regime..

You have to watch it to understand lor.. For your info, this movie won 6 oscars and is in the top 10 movies list of many critics.. 5*****stars!!!!!!
Anyone who wants the clip, come find me.. hehe...
