Day 19: A very holy day visiting 2 cathedrals!

Note: Click on the pictures with words to enlarge if you want to read.. Very interesting stuff..

Another 2 and a half hours break day.. So had to look for something to do to occupy our time again.. decided to pay a visit to the 2 famous cathedrals in Liverpool- The Liverpool Anglican as well as Metropolitan Cathedrals.. Both within walking distance from my campus, actually the Metropolitan (Paddy's Wigwam) is just across the road, hehe.. :)

First stop: Metropolitan Cathedral~

Upon entering.. the main hall..

The roof..

The design of the roof..

This is the choir stand..

Me spoiling the view, haha...

Its hard not to be awestruck once you are inside.. actually the outside is also quite impressive already.. hehe.. but as you shall see later, the cathedral is round and there are little rooms/ chapels all round, each for a different purpose, and all look beautiful..

The first room:

Chapel of the holy oils

The tapestry mentioned in the sign..

and the oils of course.. :)

The second room:

Holy Water Stoup

Thats the holy water stoup, whatever that is~

Pentecost mosaic

Kind of eerie dont you think??

The third room:

The book where they record contributions to the church..

Very nice writing~

The fourth room:

Another chapel, cant remember all the names..

The fifth room:

Bright yellow chapel :)

The sixth room:

Yet another chapel.. I didn't realise there were so many rooms >.<

The seventh room:

Note the word prisoners :)

Prisoner!! haha.. very nice picture tho, i like the way there's a glow on the wall..

The eighth room:

Middle panel..

Right-hand panel

Left hand panel

The ninth room:

Sculpture of christ and the children.. :D

So weird to see chinese characters inside~

The tenth room:

Chapel of reconciliation

Adelynne lighting candles for the purpose of reconciliating with someone dear..

Total of ten rooms then.. This statue was in the main hall..

All around the round hall, there were different plaques with numbers like these showing the numbers of the rooms.. All depicted different scens.. intricate!

Donation box

After exploring the inside of the cathedral, we then went outside to the cafe for lunch (our packed lunch, haha..)

On the steps outside

Some kids racing up the steps.. haha..

The sky was very interesting looking that day..

Looks like waves in the sky..

and I wanted this to be taken cos that round hole is actually a rubbish bin, so weird.. :)

After lunch, the next destination was the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, which is an old old building.. Well worth a visit.. you shall see why~

First glimpse of the cathedral

Sorry for the bright pictures, very very sunny that day!

I'm studying in the John Foster Building now :) so he was an architect~

The Oratory

Posing with a tombstone @.@~

At the entrance..

According to the guidebook, people who enter the cathedral usually do 2 things,
1. Say 'wow!'
2. Look up

The sign actually says "I Love You and I know You love Me" :)

Impressive eh??

Its so holy that just as we were thinking abt taking a picture together, this kind man came and asked us whether we would like him to help us take a photo.. hehe.. it came out blur, but oh well, its nice that he offered..

Can you believe that the whole place was constructed using only simple tools like these?!

Model of the cathedral.. Amazing!

Home!! :)

More things to gape at:

Click to see the details better..

The pattern on the floor..

Inlaid design on the walls

I put this photo first so you can have fun deciphering what the words are.. I suceeded after quite some time.. answer below..

Answer: On the glory of God, this foundation stone was laid by King Edward the seventh, on the 19th day of July 1904..

Tomb of an archbishop

main alter

For us to light candles and make donations..

I like what this says.. :)

I was really fair and donated 20 pence each to both cathedrals.. Feel good eventho its not much..

After that, we had to go back for our next class.. Something interesting, the road linking both cathedrals is called:

Meaningful right??

Saw this sculpture in the middle of nowhere.. (click to read)

:)

And finally:

Another Superlambanana! Will try to collect pictures of all of them.. hehe..

I enjoyed both the buildings a lot.. Its hard to describe their beauty, especially the anglican Cathedral.. its so impressive that you cant help but speak in hushed voices while you're inside.. I'm really glad that they preserved the structures so nicely.. Eventhough i'm not a Christian, I could still feel the splendour and I feel really proud of the people who contributed to both cathedrals.. Sigh~ Satisfied.. :)
